He says: Throughout our WSET training, we’ve encountered a few Yellow Tail wines thrown into our blind flights in order to see whose palate could distinguish the good from the plonk. So, we’re quite familiar with the over-manufactured, synthetic nose and taste of this brand. They tend towards artificial aromas (like cotton candy in their Chardonnay) or prunes and raisins as in the case of this Shiraz. Loads of residual sugar, and an abnormal sweetness on the finish. Made to please the masses of the easy-drinking wine drinking public, it’s easy to see why this sells as well as Welch’s grape juice, and I don’t mean to criticize Welch’s.

She says: This was the one wine we could easily pick out of the three due to its off-dry finish. The ripeness of the fruit and the strong vanilla was overpowering. It makes me sad that this is what a lot of consumers think of when they think of Aussie wine. If I was ‘playing by my rules’ as Yellow Tail advertise, I would not serve this at all.

Tasting note
