He says: Pretty simple easy sipper. Honestly, the wine selection here is pretty poor. Lots of cheap plonk marked up beyond 100%. Is Blood Alley leasing costs really that high?

She says: Nothing really memorable about this and I would have expected more from a Spanish wine with 6 years of age.  Surely something would have stood out.  I can’t even claim ‘one too many glasses’ in it’s defense.

Tasting note

Looks like: Couldn’t tell – served in a regular glass, hard to hold at angle
Smells like: Clean, developing, med- intensity, stewed plums, oak
Tastes like: Dry, med acidity, med+ body, med intensity, oak, herbaceous, blackberries, black fruit, med+ tannin, med length, med+ alcohol
Summary: Acceptable, Ready to Drink/Drink now

  • With respect to the ageing of Spanish wine, it is common practice (and legal) in certain Spanish areas to hold wines in tank before aging them as per the DO requirements. This practice is especially prevalent in non-classic regions in vintages that are prolific and widely considered as very good (like 04)
    When the wines are held in tank they are effectively on suspended animation and do not evolve as they would in barrel or bottle (but they can oxidize if storage tanks are not topped up and or inerted)

    I am guessing that the above wine was held in tank for 3 years then transferred to barrel for one year and then in bottle for 2. That would qualify it as a reserva but of course not show the development one would expect from a 6 year old reserva that had extended ageing in barrel & bottle

    Hope that explanation makes sense

    I have a 10 year old Segura Viudas Cava Brut Reserva Heredad. Is that good or bad?

      Given it’s a non-vintage wine, that’s already aged for 30 months, I’d say you should drink it asap. It is not meant to be aged further as the style is young & fresh with aged-notes of rubber/earth. Let us know how it is.
