We tasted with our guest reviewer, WineHater (although you can tell he’s anything but).

WineHater says: WOW, what a wine!!! For what this wine lacked on the nose (and the nose wasn’t that bad), it more than made up for it on the palate. Incredible intensity and length, with flavours of ripe apricots, tropical fruit, orange marmalade, caramel and honey. The wine also had a nice acidic streak to it, so it didn’t come across as being flabby. For me, this wine is clearly in the excellent range, and could be outstanding in 10-15 years with some added complexity coming from maturity. Chateau Climens is regarded as the next best producer of sweet wines in Sauternes after d’Yquem. While the prices of recent Chateau Climens’ vintages have skyrocketed, the price for the 2004 is still very reasonable.

He says: It’s funny reading WineHater’s comments as the name is fully betrayed! I absolutely loved this wine as well for it’s balance and value. Even at over $60/bottle, this is one of the world’s great examples of what wondrous feats are possible with the humble grape. It’s magic in a bottle. If you’ve only experienced BC Icewine or cheap Sauternes, stop wasting your money and buy a bottle of this. It won’t be available much longer, and it’s well worth the money, especially with the price hike of the later vintages. On the palate, this is absolute heaven, perfectly balanced acidity & sweetness, loads of complex fruit and secondary flavours, and a finish that you’ll remember for hours. Our first 5-star wine rating on Winecouver, and no questions about it.
