He says: This is the American monster truck of wines: big alcohol, big jammy fruit, big everything. The only thing it’s missing is a semblance of balance. I recommend you drink it as a chaser for Jägermeister – it’ll help it to taste more like a glass of wine. Perhaps “time heals all wounds”, and things will come into balance with some age, but I don’t think I’m going to give this one another chance at $50 a pop.

She says: Definitely my least favourite of the two wines. The nose was one dimensional with sweet ripe black fruit whilst the palate lacked balance on the finish. It’s medicinal flavours only exacerbated the very hard to swallow $48 price tag!

Tasting note

Looks like: Clear, med+ ruby
Smells like: Clean, med+ intensity, youthful, baked black fruit, earth, leather
Tastes like: Dry, med acid, med+ body, med+ intensity, med tannin, high alcohol, stewed black fruit, medicinal, cough syrup, spice, vanilla, bitter coffee grounds, med+ length
Summary: Acceptable, Needs time to develop

  • Couldn’t agree more!! I just did a blind taste of Zins 2 weeks ago and this wine received the lowest score. I’m an amateur wine judge-trainee for amateur wine competitions in BC and I gave this wine a 13.5 which in your world is a 67.5, NOT GOOD!!!!!!! Nice to see a review that’s not fabulous. Happy drinking!!

      Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, in the world of wine reviews, a lot of people are swayed by price (which is high for this bottle), producer, and other peoples’ opinions. If everyone says something is great, or 90+ points, it’s hard to voice a contrary opinion.

This is something we find annoying as well about the world of wine. Nice to see you’re of likemind on this particular bottle.
      Cheers,
