He says: Decades of supermarket sales strategy have proven that the checkout aisle is the place where most consumers abandon all common sense and make the majority of their impulse purchases. I fell victim to this. The display looked appealing. The price point was amazing. The salesgirl behind the counter chirped, “this wine was just mentioned in the Vancouver Sun”. Well, I was full of regret as soon as I popped the top off this bottle. It is absolute garbage, and almost undrinkable. Save your $11 for a winemaker who actually deserves your money.

She says: I barely drank any of this wine but a few sips was enough to tell me that I didn’t want any more. It tasted more like fruit juice than wine which makes $11 seem extremely expensive after all!

Tasting note

Tastes like: Off-dry, med- acidity, med- body, med+ intensity, med- tannin, sweet cherry, candy, mint, med+ alcohol, med bitter medicinal finish
Summary: Poor, Ready to drink, will not improve

The Cal Y Canto was sold to wholesalers for $7/btl. It’s as much as $15 on the Island

Thanks for that. We’d only pay $7 if we were going to cook with it, and wouldn’t be able to recognize the wine in the end product.

Wine truths

“When it comes to wine, I tell people to throw away the vintage charts and invest in a corkscrew. The best way to learn about wine is the drinking.”
